The following problem is an example of one of the problem types randomly selected at Conservation of Mechanical Energy

If a 82.2 kg box is pushed across the floor with a force of 316.8 N, what is its speed after 7.73 m if the coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and the floor is 0.23 and it is starting from rest?

Suggestions / Method Hints:

  • calculate the total work done pushing the box
  • subtract off the nonconservative work (due to friction)
  • the difference is equal to the change in kinetic energy
  • since the box starts from rest, this is 1/2 m * v2

Answer: 4.973 m/s
